Several parts of Ghana and other West African countries are currently experiencing blackouts due to an ongoing disruption in gas supply from Nigeria.
According to recent reports, blackouts have affected numerous cities in Ghana, the Republic of Benin, and Togo. The West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited (WAPCo), based in Accra, Ghana, announced a significant drop in gas volumes available for transportation due to maintenance work being carried out by a gas producer in Nigeria. This maintenance, which involves a three-week shutdown of the facility, has led to a substantial decrease in the gas available for WAPCo to transport to its customers.
In a statement, WAPCo expressed regret over the situation, explaining that the gas producer’s maintenance work, entirely beyond WAPCo’s control, has caused the current gas supply shortage. Despite the disruptions, WAPCo continues to transport gas from Ghana’s Western Region to Tema, and normal gas transportation is expected to resume after the maintenance period.

The power supply challenges have been acknowledged by the Ghana Grid Company Limited and the Electricity Company of Ghana. In a joint statement, they informed the public that the reduction in gas supply from Nigeria, which began on June 12, 2024, has led to power interruptions in several areas. They explained that the maintenance work in Nigeria has reduced Ghana’s overall power generation capacity, necessitating load management to minimize the impact on consumers during this period.
Both GRIDCo and ECG have apologized for the inconvenience and assured the public that they are working with stakeholders in the power value chain to optimize available resources and mitigate the effects of the gas supply reduction.
The West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited operates the West African Gas Pipeline, a crucial infrastructure linking natural gas resources to customers in the West African sub-region, particularly in Ghana. The pipeline system is bi-directional, supplying gas from both Nigeria in the east and Ghana in the west.
