NERC Chairman, Sanusi Garba, highlighted the significance of the application in addressing the longstanding issue of inadequate response by power distributors to consumer complaints regarding power disruptions. He stated, “We recently launched a new regulation that provides timelines within which public utilities, especially DisCos, are required to resolve complaints from customers. So this particular app being unveiled today is to assist the commission in monitoring whether DisCos are complying with the standard set out in that regulation.”

Originally conceived as a tool for crowd-sourcing data to assess service-based tariffs, the Power Outage Reporting System has evolved to offer real-time data through smart meters installed on all feeders. This approach ensures that the DisCos are held accountable and fulfill their service obligations as defined in tariff orders.
