Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has stirred political waters with a veiled indication that he may soon part ways with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), triggering widespread speculation about his next political move.
Speaking during a constituency outreach in Ikot Akpankuk, Ukanafun Local Government Area on Tuesday, Governor Eno made an aviation-themed analogy that many interpret as a subtle declaration of intent to defect. Comparing the PDP to a faulty airplane, he said, “If you wanted to travel with Ibom Airline, and on the verge of taking off, it developed a fault that won’t enable it to fly, won’t you board the next available plane to take you to your destination?”
The remark, coming shortly after his victory at the Supreme Court, has fueled conjecture about a potential move to the All Progressives Congress (APC), especially in light of recent defections by other top PDP figures, such as Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.
Despite not formally announcing any party switch, Governor Eno openly questioned the PDP’s viability for his political ambitions beyond 2027. His words come amid ongoing reports of internal discord and a dwindling base within the opposition party, raising alarms over a possible mass exodus.
While dropping hints about political realignment, Governor Eno reassured constituents that service delivery remains his top priority. As part of the outreach, he disbursed empowerment packages to over 400 constituents, including:
- Grants to 154 traders
- Support to 116 farmers
- ₦5 million each to four entrepreneurs for business expansion
- Equipment aid to 131 individuals
The governor cautioned beneficiaries to use the resources wisely and avoid investing in unproductive ventures such as Ponzi schemes. “This government belongs to the people—it is for you, with you, and by you,” he told the crowd, pledging to incorporate constituency needs into the 2026 budget.
Governor Eno also mentioned that four of the state’s ten federal constituencies have already been covered in his community engagement initiative, assuring that all would be reached.
Meanwhile, political analysts say the governor’s statements represent a strategic positioning ahead of the 2027 general elections. A former lawmaker, Otuekong Sunny Jackson Udoh, urged Governor Eno to remain magnanimous and wise in his post-court victory moves, as the state watches closely.
As the PDP battles internal instability, Governor Eno’s remarks mark a potential shift in Akwa Ibom’s political landscape. While no official defection has occurred, his cryptic commentary has injected fresh momentum into the ongoing conversation about the future of opposition politics in Nigeria.
