In a remarkable show of support and solidarity, Babagana Zulum, the Governor of Borno State, visited the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp in Maiduguri. This visit marked the reopening of the camp after a 13-year hiatus, and it carried with it a heartwarming gesture that left the corps members elated.
During the visit, Governor Zulum announced a generous donation of N36.4 million to provide palliative aid to the 1,215 youth corps members currently stationed in the state for their national service. Governor Zulum’s generosity extended beyond monetary assistance. This included 100 bags of rice, 10 cows, 10 bags of 100 kg of beans, and 10 gallons of cooking oil, all intended to facilitate the preparation of nutritious and satisfying meals.
Zulum’s interaction with the corps members was not just about material aid. He took the opportunity to encourage a sense of unity and dedication to the nation. “I want you to be dedicated and loyal to constituted authorities. Make friends in this part of the country so that together we can build a prosperous Nigeria with sustainable economic growth and development,” the governor emphasized, motivating the young individuals to be active contributors to the nation’s progress.
The reopening of the NYSC orientation camp in Maiduguri is a significant achievement, made possible by improved security conditions in Borno State. The camp had been suspended for over a decade due to security concerns arising from insurgent activities. This necessitated the redirection of corps members to camps in neighboring states for their initial orientation before being sent to Borno for their primary assignments.
