Governor Zulum Subsidizes Petrol to Boost Farming in Borno

Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State has taken significant steps to support farmers in the region, particularly in Damasak, by subsidizing the price of petrol to facilitate dry season farming. The subsidized price of petrol, set at N500 per litre compared to the market price of N730, aims to ease the financial burden on farmers.

During his recent visit to Damasak, Governor Zulum inaugurated a solar irrigation pump station with a capacity of 90 horsepower. This station, powered by a 115-kilowatt solar farm, includes three units of 30HP pumps capable of discharging 225 litres of water per second. This infrastructure covers 125 hectares of rice fields, aiming to enhance agricultural productivity in the area.

Governor Zulum emphasized a shift in focus from short-term food distribution to empowering farming activities for sustainable solutions to food security challenges in Borno State. Under this initiative, the government plans to provide one million litres of subsidized petrol to farmers across the state, along with distributing 20,000 bags of fertilizer and various water pump machines.

During his visit, Governor Zulum distributed agricultural inputs, including fertilizers, water pumping machines (both solar-powered and conventional), and agrochemicals, benefiting thousands of farmers in Mobar and Abadam Local Government Areas.

Additionally, the governor inspected various farming projects, including the expanded Nglayi scheme, which has grown from 500 to over 1,500 hectares since its inception in 2022.

The Borno State Commissioner for Agriculture, Engr. Bawu Musami, highlighted Governor Zulum’s efforts in promoting agriculture, citing the establishment of modern irrigation schemes across the state and directives to replicate these schemes across all three senatorial zones.

Overall, these initiatives underscore the state government’s commitment to supporting agricultural development and enhancing food security in Borno State.
