The governorship election petition tribunals have been abuzz with activity in Nigeria, as they undertake the crucial task of reviewing the results of the governorship elections held on March 18 in 28 states. According to the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022, these tribunals are mandated to hear and deliver their verdicts within 180 days. As of now, the fate of 20 out of the 28 governors has been determined by the tribunals. Out of these, 18 governors have had their election victories upheld, while the tribunals have, rather surprisingly, ousted two governors from their positions – Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano and Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa.
Nonetheless, the drama is far from over. The tribunals are poised to determine the destiny of eight more governors, teetering on the precipice of either victory affirmation or removal. In this article, we delve into the details of these governors and the reasons their positions may hang in the balance.
Alex Otti of Abia:
The Abia State governorship election petition tribunal is scheduled to announce its verdict on Friday, October 6, regarding the fate of Alex Otti, the Labour Party governor. Otti faces a challenge from Chief Ikechi Emenike of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who alleges that Otti failed to resign before joining the Labour Party.

Babagana Zulum of Borno:
Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State finds himself entangled in a legal battle before the state governorship election petition tribunal. The court may render its decision this month regarding the validity of Zulum’s victory. Umar Alkali and his party, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), contend that a fresh election should be ordered due to the omission of their names on the ballot papers during the poll.
Umar Namadi of Jigawa:
Declared the winner of the March 18 governorship election in Jigawa, APC Governor Umar Namadi awaits the tribunal’s decision. Although Namadi’s victory was rejected by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, it remains uncertain whether the opposition has formally challenged the outcome in the tribunal.
Dr. Dikko Umar Radda of Katsina:
Governor Dikko Umar of Katsina secured victory in the 2023 governorship election without facing a formal challenge or rejection from the opposition in the northwest state.

The state governorship election petition tribunal sitting in Birnin Kebbi has indicated that a verdict on the suit filed against the governor may be forthcoming.
As the tribunals prepare to pronounce their decisions, these governors find themselves in a tense waiting game. It remains to be seen whether their election victories will be affirmed, or if the tribunals will deliver a shocking blow by ousting them from their positions.
