A final-year student of the Federal University, Birnin Kebbi (FUBK), has been abducted following an attack by gunmen at an off-campus hostel in Kebbi State.
The Kebbi State Police Command, through its spokesperson CSP Nafiu Abubakar, confirmed the incident in a statement on Tuesday. The attack happened around 3:00 a.m. at Istijaba Villa, located in Unguwar Jeji, Kalgo Local Government Area.
The kidnapped student, Augustine Madubiya, 23, a 400-level Economics undergraduate, was taken from the hostel by armed men.
During the incident, a local resident, Malam Siddi Hussaini, who was tending to his cattle nearby and tried to help, was shot dead by the attackers. He was later confirmed dead by a medical doctor.
The Divisional Police Officer in Kalgo responded swiftly by deploying a team of security operatives to the scene. A combined team is currently searching the surrounding forest areas to rescue the victim and capture the suspects.
“The command is following credible leads and is committed to rescuing the victim and bringing the perpetrators to justice,” the police statement said.
The police further assured the public of ongoing efforts to maintain safety and urged anyone with useful information to assist the investigation.
