Higher Education Students’ Loans and Grants Board (HESLGB) 2025/26 Loan Cycle Now Open

The Higher Education Students’ Loans and Grants Board (HESLGB) has officially opened applications for the 2025/2026 student loan cycle. Eligible students across Malawi are encouraged to apply within the stipulated period to secure financial assistance for their higher education.
Who Can Apply for the HESLGB Student Loan?
HESLGB Executive Director, Prince Phwetekere, emphasized that student loans are only granted to those who apply and meet the eligibility criteria. This includes:
- Students who demonstrate financial need.
- Students enrolled or selected for an accredited generic degree program.
- Private university students with a minimum of six credits in their qualifying exams.
“It is important that students apply within the specified timeline, as late applications will not be considered,” Phwetekere stated.
HESLGB Loan Application Requirements
To be considered for the HESLGB student loan, applicants must provide the following documents:
- A copy of the National ID or NRB form with a system-generated sticker.
- A copy of parent/guardian’s ID.
- A copy of the applicant’s student ID or university/college admission letter.
- A deposit slip for the non-refundable application fee of K10,000.
- A completed guarantor form.
How to Apply for the HESLGB 2025/26 Student Loan
Students can apply through the Students’ Financing Management Information System (SFMIS) via the official HESLGB website www.heslgb.mw or directly through sfmis.heslgb.mw. Additionally, students can apply using the HESLGB app, which will be available during the loan application period.

Phwetekere also highlighted that female students already benefiting from the Skills for a Vibrant Economy (SAVE) Project under the Open, Distance, and e-Learning (ODeL) program must reapply to continue receiving support. However, new ODeL students are not eligible for this funding.
Moreover, students selected by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) are encouraged to apply, as both public and private university students qualify for the loan scheme.
