Hippopotamus Kills Emir of Yauri’s Guard in Kebbi State

A tragic incident unfolded in Yauri Local Government Area of Kebbi State as Usman Maigadi, a 60-year-old guard working at the Orchard Farm owned by the Emir of Yauri, Dr. Muhammad Zayyanu-Abdullahi, was killed by a mother hippopotamus. The attack occurred on Sunday, September 22, 2024, while Maigadi was fishing in the Yauri River at Tillo Village.

It was reported that the hippopotamus, acting in defense of its calf, perceived Maigadi as a threat, resulting in the fatal encounter. Despite efforts to save his life, the injuries sustained during the attack proved fatal. Maigadi was later laid to rest in accordance with Islamic rites.

The Chairman of Yauri Local Government, Abubakar Shu’aibu, confirmed the incident, expressing his condolences to the family of the deceased and the entire Yauri Emirate. Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, also conveyed his sympathy through a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Ahmed Idris. The governor urged the family to accept the loss as an act of divine will, praying for Allah’s forgiveness and eternal rest for the deceased in Jannatul Firdaus.

This unfortunate event has left the community mourning the loss of a dedicated worker who was respected in the area.
