In a bid to address the rising insecurity plaguing the South East region of Nigeria, the House of Representatives Ad hoc committee has called for the unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The committee, chaired by Hon. Obinna Aguocha, emphasized that releasing Kanu from unlawful detention is crucial for fostering lasting peace and security in the area. The move comes as the committee seeks to curtail kidnapping, assassinations, and banditry, particularly in Abia State’s Isiukwuato and Umunnochi Local Government Area.

Cross-Border Insecurity Challenges:
The committee identified the shared borders between Abia State and neighboring states as a significant factor contributing to the prevailing insecurity. Criminals take advantage of these porous borders, moving seamlessly across state lines. The interconnectedness of Isiukwuato and Umunnochi with Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo, and Anambra states through shared borders exacerbates the security concerns.
Inter-State Collaboration for Collective Security:
To effectively address the security challenges, the committee advocates for inter-state collaboration. By pooling resources, expertise, and perspectives, the South East states can establish a united front against insecurity. Recognizing that the security issues affecting one state have ripple effects on its neighbors, the committee underscores the importance of inclusive strategies for resolution.
Addressing Root Causes:
While focusing on immediate security concerns, the committee also emphasizes the significance of tackling the root causes of these issues. By addressing underlying grievances and disparities, the South East states can work toward long-term solutions that endure over time.
