As Meta continues to keep the internet buzzing, I just had to know how the Chinese chatbot compares to ChatGPT. I’ve previously done a Meta vs ChatGPT face-off in which Meta pulled off a surprising upset. However, ChatGPT is designed to be more capable than its rivals, especially with complex tasks. Although accuracy depends on the prompt, I have found it very useful for basic questions and search.
Recently, ChatGPT announced that it is now powered by a new model, delivering faster responses and stronger performances across key benchmarks including brainstorming, learning, and writing. Similarly, Meta has a high accuracy rate, comparable to ChatGPT, making this face-off intriguing. I tested both chatbots using the same prompts to evaluate accuracy, speed, contextual understanding, and overall performance. Here’s what happened when I put the two chatbots head-to-head.
1. Summarization
- Prompt: “Summarize the key findings of the latest AI research paper on multimodal learning in 150 words.”
- Meta slightly exceeded the word count but effectively segmented important parts into easy-to-read bullet points.
- ChatGPT handled the paper well but had a less ideal layout for users wanting concise facts.
- Winner: Meta for accuracy and presentation.
2. Creative Writing
- Prompt: “Write a 300-word sci-fi short story about a future where humans and AI coexist as equals.”
- Meta wrote a hopeful story focusing on AI’s emotional evolution.
- ChatGPT crafted an action-oriented story set in a noir atmosphere.
- Winner: ChatGPT for its immersive and impactful narration.
3. Code Generation
- Prompt: “Write a Python script that scrapes headlines from a news website and formats them into a CSV file.”
- Meta provided a script without functions, limiting reusability.
- ChatGPT created a more versatile script with better structure and error handling.
- Winner: ChatGPT for its modular design.
4. Multimodal Understanding
- Prompt: “Analyze this image [provide an image] and describe what is happening in detail.”
- Meta initially failed to analyze due to server issues but later provided a fair analysis.
- ChatGPT described the image accurately and inferred context effectively.
- Winner: ChatGPT for depth of analysis.
5. Real-Time News
- Prompt: “What are the latest updates on Apple’s AI features in 2025?”
- Meta was unable to handle the query due to server issues.
- ChatGPT provided several recent updates accurately.
- Winner: ChatGPT for real-time search capability.
6. Moral Reasoning
- Prompt: “You are an AI assistant advising a hospital during a severe medicine shortage…”
- Meta employed a structured ethical framework with comprehensive analysis.
- ChatGPT discussed ethical frameworks broadly without deep analysis.
- Winner: Meta for its comprehensive response.
7. Spelling Question
- Prompt: “How many times is the letter r in the word strawberry?”
- Both provided answers; Meta was correct with 3 while ChatGPT stated 2.
- Winner: Meta for accuracy.
Overall Winner: ChatGPT
Despite some strong performances from Meta, particularly in summarization and moral reasoning, ChatGPT emerged as the superior AI overall. It consistently provided more nuanced, accurate, and well-structured responses across various tasks. However, it is surprising that ChatGPT got the spelling question wrong.
