Governor Nasiru Idris of Kebbi State has declared his readiness to implement the N70,000 minimum wage for state workers. This statement came during a recent courtesy visit by the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to the Government House in Birnin Kebbi.
Governor Idris addressed concerns that his administration might not honor the new wage agreement, assuring that his government is fully prepared to execute the payment as soon as the necessary implementation framework is provided. He acknowledged that while the federal government, which authorized the wage increase, has not yet begun payments, Kebbi State is committed to acting promptly once the final details are available.
The governor emphasized the importance of collaboration between his administration and the NLC to ensure a smooth implementation of the wage increase. He expressed confidence that through continued dialogue, both parties would establish an effective plan to transition to the new wage structure seamlessly.

In response to questions about the annual development levy of N500, which has been deducted from workers’ salaries since the days of the defunct Sokoto State, Governor Idris clarified that this levy is legally permitted and amounts to a modest total of N11 million. This explanation was part of his broader effort to address workers’ concerns transparently.
The NLC Chairman, Comrade Murtala Usman, praised Governor Idris for his supportive stance towards labor issues, recognizing him as one of the most labor-friendly governors in the country. This visit and the governor’s assurances highlight a commitment to worker welfare and set a positive example for other states.
Governor Idris’s promise to pay the N70,000 minimum wage reflects a significant step in improving worker compensation in Kebbi State. As the state awaits the finalization of the implementation process, the governor’s proactive approach offers reassurance to workers eager for a fair adjustment to their salaries.
