Labour Party chieftain Yunusa Tanko has stated that only the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) can determine the legality of the recent involvement of Governor Alex Otti of Abia State and Peter Obi in party matters.
Their intervention resulted in the formation of a 29-member caretaker committee to temporarily lead the party, with former Finance Minister Nenadi Usman appointed as the committee chair.

In a recent appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Tanko emphasized that INEC is the only body authorized to rule on the legality of such an intervention.
This development follows a statement from Labour Party spokesperson Obiora Ifoh, asserting that the meeting that led to the committee’s formation was not sanctioned by the party and did not represent its interests. The faction loyal to Julius Abure expressed surprise at the appointment of Nenadi Usman, noting that she is not a registered party member and only became involved during Peter Obi’s presidential campaign in 2023.
INEC’s position on the issue is awaited to clarify the legality of this new leadership arrangement.
