INEC Uploads Edo Election Results to Online Portal as Voting Ends in Some Areas

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced the uploading of Polling Unit (PU) results to the INEC Results Viewing (IReV) portal, following the conclusion of voting in several areas during the ongoing governorship election in Edo State. This step comes as part of INEC’s commitment to ensuring transparency and real-time access to election outcomes for the public, observers, and stakeholders

According to a report by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), voting officially concluded after the last person in line cast their vote by 2:30 p.m. However, INEC announced an extension in areas where the voting process had begun late, allowing polling units in those locations to close at a later time. The actual closing times in such areas would be determined individually by each polling unit, depending on when voting commenced.

As of 3:10 p.m., INEC had successfully uploaded results from 333 Polling Units to the IReV portal, representing 7.37% of the total 4,519 Polling Units across the 18 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Edo State.

In Ovia South West Local Government Area, results from 15 out of 195 Polling Units were uploaded, while in Etsako East Local Government Area, 12 out of 166 Polling Units had their results posted to the portal. In the more densely populated Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area, 68 out of 641 Polling Unit results were already available for public viewing on the IReV portal.

The IReV portal allows voters, political parties, and election observers to track the progress of election results in real-time, providing a critical tool for transparency and accountability in the electoral process. With results continuing to be uploaded throughout the state, INEC has emphasized the importance of this system in ensuring that all votes are accurately captured and made accessible to the public as they are collated.

INEC’s decision to extend voting time in areas where the process started late aims to ensure that no voter is disenfranchised due to operational delays. This extension has been welcomed by many voters who experienced late commencement of voting in their polling units. The commission has assured voters that every vote cast will be counted and reflected on the IReV portal.

As the collation of results progresses, there is growing anticipation for the final outcome of the Edo governorship election. Stakeholders are closely monitoring the election, with political parties expressing confidence in the transparency of the electoral process due to the continuous updates provided on the IReV portal.

In the lead-up to the election, INEC had reiterated its commitment to conducting a free, fair, and credible election, and the deployment of the IReV portal is seen as a significant step toward fulfilling that promise. The portal allows anyone with internet access to view election results as they are uploaded, reducing the risk of manipulation or interference during the collation process.

INEC has also called on the public to remain patient and calm as the final results are collated and uploaded. The commission reassured voters that the entire process is being handled with the utmost integrity and that any challenges or delays experienced during the uploading of results would be addressed swiftly to ensure a smooth and transparent conclusion to the election.

As results from more Polling Units across the state are expected to be uploaded in the coming hours, citizens are encouraged to visit the IReV portal regularly to stay updated on the latest developments in the Edo governorship election.
