As Nigeria continues to endure heavy rainfall and widespread flooding, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) has allocated an additional $668,000 to support emergency relief efforts across the most affected states. This funding comes through IOM’s Rapid Response Fund, designed to provide swift assistance to communities facing urgent crises.

A Critical Intervention Amid a Worsening Crisis
Flooding has created extensive challenges for communities in Nigeria, with thousands facing displacement, loss of property, and health risks. The latest funding from IOM, made possible through the support of USAID’s Bureau of Humanitarian Assistance, aims to address these pressing needs by providing essential resources to those struggling with the aftermath of the floods.
This recent allocation brings IOM’s total funding to over $2.4 million in 2024 alone for flood relief efforts in Nigeria. Paola Pace, Chief of Mission ad interim for IOM Nigeria, expressed gratitude for the ongoing support, emphasizing the importance of rapid, impactful aid.
“Their support is vital in enabling IOM and local partners to provide life-saving assistance and to help communities rebuild and recover from the catastrophic impacts of the floods,” Pace stated.
Supporting Flood-Affected Communities with Targeted Assistance
This additional funding will be channeled to humanitarian initiatives in Jigawa, Katsina, and Bauchi States, where the floods have left tens of thousands in urgent need of support. The IOM is collaborating with local partners—Relief Rescue Initiative, Safer World Foundation, and the Community Engagement and Social Development Initiative—to ensure that resources reach those who need them most.
The scope of the aid provided includes emergency shelter, clean water, and sanitation facilities, alongside multi-purpose cash assistance for over 228,777 people affected by the flooding. These measures are designed to deliver critical support while promoting community recovery and resilience in the wake of such extensive damage.
Building Resilience Through Local Partnerships
Beyond immediate relief, IOM is working closely with local and governmental bodies to foster a coordinated response that bolsters both immediate needs and long-term resilience. According to IOM, these initiatives are part of a broader strategy that involves extensive collaboration with local authorities and humanitarian partners to ensure a comprehensive response.
“IOM’s efforts are in close coordination with governmental agencies, local authorities, and other humanitarian partners to ensure a comprehensive and effective response. The organisation remains committed to working collaboratively to deliver timely and impactful assistance to those in need,” the IOM report noted.
Increased Funding Reflects Ongoing Commitment to Nigeria’s Crisis Response
This allocation follows an initial $1.8 million fund designated by IOM in October to support nine non-governmental organizations providing emergency relief. With over $2.4 million now dedicated to Nigerian flood relief efforts, IOM reaffirms its commitment to sustaining support for impacted communities.
Flooding remains a significant risk in Nigeria, and IOM’s continued support through these financial resources is essential for both immediate recovery and sustainable resilience efforts. The organization’s proactive approach, supported by partners like USAID, represents a crucial component in mitigating the long-term impacts of seasonal flooding
