In a bid to address shortages of skilled workers in various sectors, the Irish government has launched the Critical Skills Employment Permit scheme, extending an invitation to foreign workers, including Nigerians, who possess critical skills. The initiative aims to fill gaps in disciplines such as production management, ICT, health and social services management, natural and social sciences, engineering, information technology, and telecommunications.

The scheme is applicable to individuals offered a job running for two years or more from a registered company or employer in Ireland. Job offers must meet specific criteria, including a minimum annual salary of €32,000 for occupations listed in the Critical Skills Occupation List or €64,000 for those not on the list. Work permits are not obtainable for companies with over 50% non-EEA national employees, except for start-ups supported by Enterprise Ireland or IDA Ireland.

Application Process:
Applications can be submitted online through the Employment Permits Online System (EPOS), with a €1,000 fee. Refunds of 90% are offered for refused or withdrawn applications. The permit does not require labor market needs tests, eliminating the need for job advertising by employers.
Family Inclusion and Residency:
Foreign workers under the Critical Skills Employment route can bring their families to live with them in Ireland. Family members must apply for separate visas if required, or provide proof of their relationship to the permit holder. Partners of skilled workers may work in Ireland without a permit through the Stamp 1G IRP, while other family members can apply for a Dependent/Spouse/Partner Employment Permit.

Path to Citizenship:
The Critical Skills Employment Permit is initially issued for two years. After this period, skilled workers can apply for a Stamp 4 permission, allowing them to live and work in Ireland without an employment permit. This permission is renewable, and after residing in Ireland for five years, individuals can apply for citizenship by naturalization.
