In a significant development, Portuguese police announced on Saturday that they have successfully apprehended a 69-year-old member of Italy’s notorious Camorra crime group, who had managed to evade authorities for over two decades. The unidentified individual was captured in northern Portugal and was promptly taken into custody, according to an official police statement.
The arrested man had previously been sentenced to a 15-year prison term, but he managed to elude incarceration by fleeing before serving his sentence. Authorities have not disclosed the specific details of the charges against him.

Following his arrest, the 69-year-old suspect was brought before a court in the northern Portuguese city of Porto. Subsequently, he was remanded to jail as extradition proceedings are initiated. The Camorra, notorious for its criminal activities, is primarily based in the southern Naples region and stands as one of Italy’s three major organized crime syndicates. The other two include Sicily’s Cosa Nostra, commonly known as the mafia, and the ‘Ndrangheta, centered in the Calabria region. This arrest represents a notable success in the ongoing efforts to combat organized crime across international borders.
