JAMB Clarifies Admission Criteria Amid Complaints of Denied Admissions

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has addressed concerns from candidates and parents over the alleged denial of university admissions despite high UTME scores. The board emphasized that admission is not based solely on UTME scores but on a comprehensive ranking system.

Admission Is More Than Just UTME Scores

In a statement issued on Sunday by its spokesperson, Fabian Benjamin, JAMB explained that universities consider multiple factors when admitting students. These include O’level results, UTME scores, and post-UTME performance. The board stressed that a high UTME score does not automatically guarantee admission.

JAMB cited cases where candidates and parents accused universities of unfairly rejecting students. One example involved a candidate who scored 201 in UTME but had an aggregate score of 34%, which was below the University of Calabar’s cut-off marks. Another case involved a candidate with a 345 UTME score who ranked 86th at the University of Jos, while only 68 students could be admitted on merit.

JAMB Urges Candidates to Seek Clarification

JAMB urged parents and candidates to avoid making assumptions and instead use its ‘ticketing platform’ to raise concerns and seek clarifications. The board assured the public that its Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) ensures transparency in the admission process.

Additionally, JAMB warned against the misuse of the ‘exceptionally brilliant’ admission window for candidates under 16, noting an increase in questionable applications.

Action Against Admission Fraud

The board also revealed that a senior university official is currently facing prosecution for admission-related misconduct, with four others under investigation. JAMB reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy for any form of malpractice in the admission process.

It encouraged candidates and parents to rely on official channels for information instead of making unverified public accusations.
