JAMB Warns Against Underage Candidates

JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, has issued a firm warning to all applicants regarding the misuse of underage registration. Out of 780,202 candidates registered so far, 11,512 are underage. Although the board initially permitted exceptionally brilliant candidates below the age of 16 to register, this privilege has now been misused.

Prof. Oloyede emphasized that candidates registering underage risk severe penalties. He noted,

“It will have been better for them to have waited for their time, as they are going to waste their money.”

This decisive action comes as a response to instances where parents and guardians may be exploiting loopholes—such as premature school enrollments and even certificate fraud—to bypass the minimum age requirement. JAMB’s strict enforcement is aimed at ensuring that only genuinely eligible and prepared candidates proceed, thereby maintaining the integrity of the admission process.

JAMB Offers Waivers for Exceptional Underage Candidates: 80% Score Requirement for Admission

JAMB Offers Waivers for Exceptional Underage Candidates

In a progressive move, JAMB has introduced a waiver policy for exceptionally gifted candidates under the age of 16. While the national minimum admissible age remains 16, candidates who demonstrate outstanding academic performance can still be considered for admission if they achieve at least an 80% score (320 out of 400) in key examinations.

During a recent stakeholder meeting, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede explained that the waiver is reserved for candidates who excel in multiple assessments—whether it be the UTME, WAEC, Post-UTME, or GCE O/Level examinations. He stressed that:

“Exceptional candidates must show concrete evidence of their brilliance; mere promises will not suffice.”

The policy is designed to nurture true talent while curbing the trend of age manipulation by parents, who sometimes alter their children’s ages to meet admission requirements. This initiative underscores JAMB’s commitment to merit-based selection while safeguarding the academic integrity of the examination process.

JAMB Cautions Against Unauthorized Registration Centres: Secure Your Registration

JAMB Cautions Against Unauthorized Registration Centres

JAMB is urging candidates to register only at approved centres to avoid the risk of invalidating their applications. Mukarram Adamu, the Public Relations Officer for JAMB in Jigawa State, warned that registration through unauthorized centres could lead to disqualification.

In Jigawa State alone, 1,021 candidates have registered at one of the 12 officially sanctioned Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres. This move is part of JAMB’s broader strategy to ensure a secure, transparent, and fraud-free registration process for both the UTME and Direct Entry programmes.

Adamu advised candidates to:

  • Verify the legitimacy of the registration centre.
  • Report any suspicious activities immediately.
  • Stay informed through official JAMB channels.

This proactive approach by JAMB is aimed at protecting candidates and preserving the credibility of the registration process.

Speaking at several Computer-Based Test centres in Lagos, Prof. Oloyede highlighted innovative initiatives introduced this year:

  • Trial Testing Category: Underage candidates can experience the CBT format without paying the full registration fee. Instead, they cover minimal costs such as materials, centre charges, and bank commissions.
  • Accelerated Registration Pace: With daily registration numbers exceeding initial expectations, JAMB anticipates reaching over one million registrations well before the end of the registration period.

These initiatives are designed not only to ensure a seamless registration process but also to offer a practical testing experience for all candidates. The record-breaking numbers reflect JAMB’s efficiency and commitment to adapting its processes to meet growing demand.
