JUST IN: El-Rufai Quits APC, Joins SDP, Gives Reasons

Former Kaduna State Governor and founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nasir El-Rufai, has officially resigned from the ruling party and joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

El-Rufai announced his decision on Monday through a post on his verified Facebook page, stating that he had submitted his resignation letter to his APC ward in Kaduna. He added that the move followed extensive consultations with his mentors, colleagues, and supporters.

Why El-Rufai Left APC

Explaining his reasons for leaving, El-Rufai expressed disappointment with the APC’s leadership, accusing the party of failing to uphold internal democracy and neglecting its members.

“Developments in the last two years confirm that there is no desire on the part of those who currently control and run the APC to acknowledge, much less address, the unhealthy situation of the party,” he said.

He noted that while he had hoped to remain in the party until retirement, the APC’s failure to address key concerns forced him to reconsider his membership.

His Plans in SDP

El-Rufai stated that as a member of the SDP, he would work to unite opposition parties and create a strong platform to challenge the APC in upcoming elections, including the 2027 general election.

“As a member of the SDP, I will focus on engaging with and persuading other opposition leaders and parties to join us and congregate under a unified democratic platform to challenge the APC in all elections and bye-elections between now and 2027 by the Grace of God,” he said.

He urged his supporters and other Nigerians seeking change to join him in the SDP, expressing confidence that the party could provide a credible alternative to the APC.

El-Rufai’s defection marks a major shift in Nigeria’s political landscape and is expected to have significant implications for the 2027 elections.
