In a move aimed at enhancing the welfare of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, the Federal Government of Nigeria has given the green light for an upward adjustment in the allowance allocated to corps members. The announcement was made by Hassan Taura, the Kaduna State Coordinator of NYSC, during a press interaction held immediately after the inauguration of the 2023 Batch B Stream 2 orientation course.
While specifics regarding the revised allowances were not divulged by the coordinator, he emphasized that the decision to augment the allowance was a clear demonstration of the government’s commitment to improving the living conditions of the youth engaged in the national service program. Speaking to journalists, Taura remarked, “First, the federal government in its wisdom has reviewed the allowance of the corps members.”

One of the primary concerns raised during the press session was the overall well-being of corps members during their orientation and subsequent service. Taura reassured the attendees that his priority was ensuring that the quality and quantity of services provided to the corps members were of utmost excellence. He promised, “I told them (corps members) I’m going to make their experience of good quality and quantity. I told them I will ensure that they won’t spend their money unnecessarily. This is the promise I made to them and I’m fulfilling them. I’m going to support them in such a way that they will have a fulfilling experience. They don’t even have much money, so it is our duty to ensure we support them well.”

Additionally, the state coordinator shed light on the measures in place to guarantee the prompt payment of stipends to corps members during their primary assignments. He mentioned, “In line with our operations of the monthly stipend we pay corp members, we expect their employers, be it state government or private organizations where we post corps members, to provide them some additional stipend in line with what the Federal Government sends them. These employers should be able to fulfill that.”
The decision to increase the allowance for NYSC corps members comes as a welcome development, signaling the government’s ongoing dedication to the welfare of its youth population. With this affirmative step, the Federal Government underscores its commitment to supporting and uplifting the nation’s future leaders during their period of national service.
