Kano, Nigeria – May 24, 2024 – In a historic turn of events, Muhammadu Lamido Sanusi II has been reappointed as the 14th Emir of Kano, exactly 1,545 days after his deposition. This development follows the approval by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, who assented to the Kano State Emirates Council (Amendment number 2) Bill, 2024, recently passed by the House of Assembly.
The new legislation effectively repeals laws established by the former governor Abdullahi Ganduje, which had created five separate emirates within Kano and led to Sanusi’s dethronement on March 9, 2020. These laws were the Kano Emirate Council Law 2019, Kano State Emir’s Appointment and Deposition Amendment Law 2019, and Kano State Emirate Council Amendment Law 2023.

The Road to Reinstatement
On May 23, 2024, the Kano State House of Assembly held a special session led by Speaker Jibrin Falgore to pass the Kano Emirates Council Law (repeal bill) 2024. The bill successfully moved through its second and third readings, culminating in the dissolution of the five emirates and the abolishment of the related emirate offices.
Lawan Hussaini, the Majority Leader representing Dala Constituency, emphasized that the previous government’s creation of multiple emirates had distorted the traditional structure of Kano. The Assembly’s decision aims to restore the Kano Emirate to its original form.
Governor Yusuf’s Commitment
Governor Yusuf signed the repeal bill into law in the presence of key state officials, immediately reinstating Muhammadu Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano. The governor also issued a 48-hour notice to the five former emirs to vacate their residences and hand over emirate properties to the deputy governor’s office.
Governor Yusuf expressed confidence that this move would unify the people of Kano and foster socio-economic development. He stated that the reinstatement of Sanusi II aligns with his campaign promise to restore Kano’s cultural heritage and legacy.
