The Nigerian national power grid experienced another collapse on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, resulting in widespread power outages across multiple states. This is the latest in a series of collapses impacting the country’s power generation and distribution systems, creating challenges for industries, businesses, and households alike.
According to recent data, the grid’s power generation initially reached a peak of 3,934.77 megawatts around 6 a.m. on Tuesday. However, by 1 p.m., generation had dropped significantly to 2,711 MW, before completely halting by 2-3 p.m., when it hit 0.00 MW, plunging parts of the country into darkness.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) reported a “partial disturbance” in the grid around 1:52 p.m. According to Ndidi Mbah, the TCN spokesperson, the collapse resulted from a series of line and generator trips, which disrupted stability across the grid. Although a large portion of the grid suffered from the power disturbance, some parts managed to avoid a total blackout.
TCN engineers are currently working to restore power, with supply to Abuja reportedly resumed by 2:49 p.m. Restoration efforts are underway to gradually bring bulk power back to other affected areas, although TCN has not provided an exact timeline for full recovery.
The company acknowledged the inconvenience caused to electricity consumers and expressed its apologies for the impact. Power grid failures have become a recurrent issue in Nigeria, affecting both the economy and the daily lives of citizens.
As the government continues to address these infrastructural and technical issues, many Nigerians hope for lasting improvements to ensure a stable and reliable power supply in the future.
