JUST IN: Nigerian Fixed Phone Lines Transitioning to 10-Digit Format by 2024

Nigerian Fixed Phone Lines Transitioning to 10-Digit Format by 2024

In a recent announcement, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has brought significant changes to the nation’s fixed phone lines numbering format. Effective from January 1, 2024, Nigeria’s Fixed-Lines Numbering Format will expand from eight digits to 10 digits, introducing the “02” prefix before existing fixed numbers. This transformative shift in the telecommunications landscape will usher in a more efficient and expansive system for all Nigerian residents.

The NCC’s decision aims to align with international standards and improve the overall communication infrastructure within the country. This move follows the practices of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a United Nations body overseeing Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). By embracing a 10-digit format, Nigeria is poised to enhance its telecommunications capabilities and offer more extensive and sophisticated services to its citizens.

Key points to note regarding this transition:

  1. Concurrent Operation Until December 31, 2023: Existing fixed phone numbers will continue to operate concurrently with the new 10-digit format until December 31, 2023. This grace period allows for a seamless transition for both service providers and customers.
  2. Full Implementation on January 1, 2024: Starting from January 1, 2024, the new numbering format with the “02” prefix will become fully operational. It’s crucial for all users to update their contact information and adjust to the new format to avoid disruptions in communication.
  3. Examples of Format Change: For instance, the current number format of 09461700 will transform into 02094617000 in the new numbering system. Similarly, major cities like Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, and Kano will see their current number formats evolve to include the “02” prefix.
  4. Mobile Numbering Remains Unchanged: Importantly, this change only affects fixed telephone numbers. There will be no alteration to the existing mobile numbering format. Mobile phone users can continue to use their current numbers without any modifications.

This monumental shift is part of the NCC’s commitment to modernize and improve Nigeria’s telecommunications infrastructure, ensuring that it remains on par with global standards. It is advisable for all residents and businesses to take note of these changes and prepare for the upcoming transition to the 10-digit fixed phone numbering format.

As Nigeria embraces these changes in phone number formatting, the nation is poised for a more interconnected future, where communication is faster, more efficient, and adaptable to the evolving needs of its people.
