JUST IN: NLC Explores the Possibility of Raising Minimum Wage to N100,000 or N200,000

In response to the ever-increasing cost of living, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has revealed that the new minimum wage in the country may be raised to either N100,000 or even N200,000. This development comes as the NLC seeks to address the challenges posed by rising inflation and the need for workers to meet their basic needs.

The NLC, in collaboration with the Trade Union Congress (TUC), had initially planned a strike to protest the removal of fuel subsidies. However, this strike was postponed following a meeting with government officials in Abuja. Joe Ajaero, the President of the NLC, explained that this delay was aimed at allowing the government time to fulfill its commitments to organized labor. A key part of these commitments is the N35,000 wage award, which Ajaero clarified is not intended to replace the minimum wage.

Ajaero emphasized that the N35,000 wage award is an addition to the existing minimum wage of N30,000 and should not be misconstrued as the new minimum wage. Instead, he pointed out that numerous factors would be taken into account when determining the revised minimum wage, including inflation and the cost of living.

“We would not go to ask for N65,000. We would go for a realistic amount because N65,000 is about $70, which is not up to the minimum wage,” Ajaero noted.

To establish a new minimum wage, the involvement of the National Assembly is crucial. As Ajaero highlighted, “The minimum wage is a product of law. Until it is legislated in the National Assembly, it is not a minimum wage.”

As the NLC explores the possibility of increasing the minimum wage to N100,000 or even N200,000, the Nigerian workforce eagerly anticipates a resolution that reflects the economic realities they face daily.
