JUST IN: NPC Urged to Postpone 2023 Census, Reveals the reason

A religious group has called on the Nigerian Population Commission (NPC) to postpone the 2023 population and housing census scheduled to take place next month due to the high level of insecurity in the country. The group, which has chosen to remain unnamed, cited the presence of violent groups such as Boko Haram and bandits in certain areas of the country, which makes it impossible for census enumerators to access these regions.

In a statement, the group said that conducting an accurate census would be impossible under such circumstances, and therefore, the exercise should be postponed until the security situation improves. The statement added that the population and housing census is a crucial exercise that provides critical information for policymaking, social and economic planning, and resource allocation, and it is essential to ensure that all parts of the country are safe before undertaking such an important exercise.

The NPC has not yet responded to the religious group’s call for the postponement of the census. However, given the current security challenges facing Nigeria, it is crucial that the government takes all necessary measures to ensure the safety of citizens and census enumerators in all parts of the country.

The NPC had earlier announced that the census exercise would hold from May 3 to June 20, 2023. This is the first time in over a decade that the census will take place, and it is expected to provide critical data that will aid in policymaking, social and economic planning, and resource allocation.

The religious group’s call for the postponement of the census is significant and should not be taken lightly.
