JUST IN: NYSC To Receive N85,000 Allowance

In a groundbreaking move, the Government of Taraba State has recently declared a significant boost to the allowances for members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) serving in the state. The announcement was made by Zainab Usman, the Taraba State Commissioner for Information and Reorientation, in a statement released on Sunday. This development is set to provide much-needed financial relief to the dedicated youth corps members contributing to the state’s education sector.

The new allowances are as follows:

N50,000 Medical Allowance: NYSC members who are posted to schools will now receive a one-time N50,000 medical allowance, a gesture that reflects the government’s commitment to the health and well-being of these young educators.
N25,000 Accommodation Allowance per Term: In addition to the medical allowance, NYSC members will be entitled to a generous N25,000 accommodation allowance per term, lightening the financial burden of securing suitable lodging during their service year.
N10,000 Monthly Support: To further support the corps members in meeting their daily needs, the Taraba State government has also approved a monthly N10,000 allowance.

This remarkable decision comes as a response to the substantial surge in school enrollments within the state’s primary and secondary schools. The government’s prior declaration of free basic education, along with the provision of uniforms and learning materials, has led to a notable increase in students attending these institutions. As a result, the state government recognizes the valuable role played by NYSC members in the educational system and has acted swiftly to acknowledge their efforts.

It is worth noting that the Federal Government of Nigeria currently pays NYSC members a monthly allowance of N33,000, in compliance with the national minimum wage, which was signed into law by President Buhari on April 18, 2019. However, the decision of the Taraba State government to offer these enhanced allowances underscores their commitment to both education and the welfare of the NYSC members serving in the state.

As workers across Nigeria anticipate a potential review of the current minimum wage, following the removal of the fuel subsidy in the country, the Taraba State government’s progressive stance on supporting NYSC members sets a commendable precedent.
