In a significant move, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially appointed Mr. Shaakaa Chira as the new Auditor-General for the Federation, following the recommendation made by the Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC). This appointment signifies a crucial development in Nigeria’s governance and audit system, which had been marred by the absence of a substantive Auditor-General for the Federation.
Presidential spokesman, Ajuri Ngelale, made the announcement in an official statement on Friday, confirming that President Tinubu had exercised his powers as stipulated in Section 86 of the 1999 Constitution (Amended) to appoint Mr. Chira.
The appointment came after a rigorous screening exercise conducted by the Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC). Mr. Chira emerged as the most qualified candidate, demonstrating his competence by scoring the highest in the examination amongst all qualified candidates for the position.

The importance of this appointment cannot be overstated. The absence of a substantive Auditor-General for the Federation had repercussions on the auditing of ministries, departments, and agencies of the Nigerian government. It had also led to a standstill in the operations of the public accounts of both chambers of the National Assembly, as the reports of the Auditor-General for the Federation form a significant part of their responsibilities. Notably, these reports were not filed for three consecutive years: 2020, 2021, and 2022.
This vacancy has posed challenges in assessing the true state of public finances within various government entities, hindering transparency and accountability. With the appointment of Mr. Chira, there is renewed hope that the government can now move forward with the critical auditing processes necessary for a well-functioning administration.

In his statement, President Tinubu expressed his expectations that the new Auditor-General will justify the confidence reposed in him. The President emphasized the need for Mr. Chira to live up to the high expectations that Nigerians have concerning the execution of the Renewed Hope Agenda of his administration.
This appointment is not just about filling a vacant position; it’s about revitalizing the government’s auditing processes and ensuring that they align with the nation’s goals and aspirations. Nigerians will be watching closely as Mr. Chira takes up his new role, and the hope is that this appointment will usher in a new era of transparency and accountability in Nigeria’s public finances.
