In a surprising turn of events, President Bola Tinubu has issued a directive recalling all Nigerian ambassadors, both career and non-career, from their respective diplomatic postings around the world. This unprecedented move was officially announced by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, through his media aide, Alkasim Abdulkadir, on Saturday, September 2, 2023.
This recall affects a total of 83 diplomats who were deployed to represent Nigeria in various foreign countries. It is worth noting that former President Muhammadu Buhari had appointed these envoys in July 2020, comprising 41 non-career ambassadors and 42 career ambassadors, following their confirmation by the Senate in accordance with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution.
The statement confirming the recall emphasized the president’s prerogative in managing the nation’s diplomatic corps: “Ambassadors, as representatives of the country, serve at the behest of the President, and it’s his prerogative to send or recall them from any country.”
