In a pre-AFCON friendly held in Abu Dhabi, the Super Eagles of Nigeria faced a setback as they were handed a 2-0 defeat by Guinea. The match, just days before the AFCON kick-off, has raised concerns about Nigeria’s readiness for the upcoming tournament.
Despite featuring a strong lineup, with William Troost-Ekong leading the side and Stanley Nwabali in goal, Nigeria found themselves trailing early in the game. Guinea’s Aguibou Camara netted in the 14th minute, setting the tone for a challenging encounter.
An opportunity to level the score came when Sadiq Umar was fouled in the box, earning Nigeria a penalty. However, Simon Moses’ spot kick was saved by the Guinean goalkeeper, leaving the Super Eagles trailing at halftime.
Guinea extended their lead in the 64th minute with a goal from Facinet Conté, compounding Nigeria’s woes. Despite efforts to rally for an equalizer, the Super Eagles couldn’t overcome their fellow West Africans.

This defeat follows the Super Eagles’ impressive 12-0 win against a Dubai-based club in another friendly tie. As the team returns home, they are set to be honored by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State in a send-forth ceremony. The 25 players and officials will then head to Cote d’Ivoire for the AFCON competition, beginning on Saturday.
Nigeria, winners of the 2013 tournament, is placed in Group A alongside the host nation, Guinea-Bissau, and Equatorial Guinea. Their quest for a fourth continental title starts on Sunday, January 14th, 2023, with a challenging match against Equatorial Guinea.
