Kaduna Government Rewards Released Protesters with ₦100,000, Smartphones, and More

In a show of reconciliation and support, Governor Sani Uba of Kaduna State has gifted ₦100,000 and smartphones to 39 individuals recently released from detention following their involvement in the #EndBadGovernance protests. The gesture, aimed at encouraging positive societal reintegration, was part of a broader rehabilitation package announced by the state government.

The Secretary to the Kaduna State Government, Abdulkadir Meyere, who represented Governor Uba during the announcement, emphasized the administration’s commitment to the welfare of the released individuals. He revealed plans to rehabilitate and empower them, with opportunities ranging from skill acquisition and business start-ups to direct employment for those who qualify.

“The governor has directed that we collect the academic credentials of those who have completed tertiary education. Some will receive start-up capital, while others will be taught new skills or offered employment,” Meyere stated.

The state government also outlined its strategy for monitoring the activities and conduct of the former detainees. This includes gathering their personal details, such as contact information and next-of-kin, to ensure compliance with good behavior.

Prior to their release, the protesters underwent medical examinations and psycho-social counseling to prepare them for reintegration into society. Religious leaders from both Islamic and Christian communities were also engaged to deliver motivational sermons, urging the individuals to embrace positive values and avoid negative influences.

The #EndBadGovernance protests, sparked by widespread dissatisfaction with Nigeria’s economic conditions, initially began as peaceful demonstrations in August but escalated into violent unrest in some regions. Following months of detention and subsequent public outcry—particularly over the presence of minors among the detained—President Bola Tinubu intervened, calling for their release.

With promises of further support contingent on their conduct, the Kaduna State Government aims to transform these individuals into productive members of society, thereby turning a challenging chapter into an opportunity for growth and development.
