Kano Court Orders Arrest of Popular Musician Ado Gwanja

In a recent development, the Kano State High Court, presided by Justice Aisha Mahmud, has issued an order for the arrest of popular Hausa musician, Ado Isa Gwanja. This ruling comes as a reaffirmation of a previous decision by the Upper Sharia Court in Bichi, which had also mandated the musician’s arrest last year.

The legal action against Gwanja was initiated by Barrister Badamasi Gandu, representing the Kano Ulamas Forum. The forum had raised concerns about the musician’s activities, alleging that they were in violation of the moral teachings of Islam and the cultural values of Kano State. Six other individuals were also implicated in the case.

Initially, Gwanja and his co-defendants sought protection from the state high court, securing an interim order preventing the police from arresting them until a hearing could take place for their fundamental rights enforcement application. However, on Monday, Justice Aisha Mahmud withdrew the earlier restraining order, instructing the police to proceed with the arrest and investigation of the musician.

Furthermore, the court has imposed restrictions on Ado Gwanja’s public appearances, barring him from performing at events such as wedding ceremonies until the substantive suit is resolved. Additionally, the musician is required to submit his music to the state film and videos censorship board for approval.
