In a remarkable display of honesty, Awwalu Salisu, a 23-year-old commercial tricyclist based in Kano, has been rewarded with a staggering N250 million scholarship after returning N15 million left in his tricycle by a Chadian businessman in 2023.
The LEADERSHIP Media Group recognized Awwalu’s integrity at its annual conference and awards ceremony, where he was honored as the ‘Outstanding Young Person of the Year 2023.’ The recognition came as a result of his rare act of honesty, which captured the nation’s attention.

During the ceremony, Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party and recipient of the LEADERSHIP Politician of the Year 2023 award, took the lead in acknowledging Awwalu’s virtue. He promptly offered a scholarship covering education up to the Ph.D. level at Abuja-based Baze University.
Following this generous gesture, Niger State governor, Mohammed Umar Bago, and co-winner of the LEADERSHIP Governor of the Year Award, joined in to further appreciate Awwalu’s honesty. In a light-hearted moment, Governor Bago, representing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), announced an additional N250 million scholarship award.

This substantial scholarship will be divided among various contributors, including Governor Bago personally, President Bola Tinubu, ministers, APC Governors Forum, and the Niger State government. Awwalu is set to receive N50 million from each of these entities, culminating in the significant N250 million scholarship fund.
The collective support for Awwalu Salisu not only recognizes his commendable act but also aims to inspire other young Nigerians to uphold the virtue of honesty. This uplifting story serves as a testament to the impact of integrity in a society and highlights the importance of acknowledging and rewarding such noble deeds.
