Kano, Nigeria – In a move aimed at maintaining peace and security, the Kano State Police Command has announced a ban on Durbar activities during the upcoming Eid-el-Kabir celebrations. This decision, disclosed by the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Usaini Gumel, is part of efforts to prevent any potential unrest amidst ongoing disputes over the Kano Emirates.
The Commissioner emphasized that the ban applies to all parties involved in the Durbar activities traditionally held during the festival. He urged worshippers to observe their Eid prayers at designated grounds as usual, reinforcing adherence to existing court orders related to the Kano Emirates tussle.

“We will enforce the court order and advise the contending parties to respect it and maintain a peaceful distance from each other,” Mr. Gumel stated. He further called for collaboration from all stakeholders in ensuring a safe and secure environment throughout the festivities.
The backdrop of this decision involves the recent directive by the deposed 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, instructing his District Heads to participate in the Sallah Durbar celebration. However, the police command clarified that no formal request for this event had been received from Bayero.

The political landscape of Kano has been marked by significant developments following the repeal of the Kano Emirate Council Law 2019, which led to the division of the Kano emirate into five. This legislative change was recently overturned, reinstating Lamido Sanusi as the 16th Emir of Kano by Governor Abba Yusuf. Despite these changes, Ado Bayero continues to assert his claim to the Emirate from a mini palace in Nasarawa.
