In a move aimed at easing the financial burden on Muslim pilgrims, the Kano State government has approved a subsidy of N1.4 billion for 2,096 intending pilgrims from the state for the upcoming 2024 Hajj exercise. This decision comes in response to a directive from the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), requiring each intending pilgrim to pay an additional N1.9 million to the 2024 Hajj fare.
During a media briefing held on Wednesday in Kano, the Director General of the Kano State Pilgrims Welfare Board, Alhaji Lamin Dan Baffa, disclosed the state government’s initiative to cover the additional cost for the registered pilgrims. He emphasized that the subsidy was introduced in light of the recent hike in Hajj fare by NAHCON, attributed to the instability of the exchange rate, and to address the economic challenges faced by many intending pilgrims.

With the subsidy in effect, intending pilgrims from Kano State will now only be required to pay an additional N1.4 million, significantly reducing the financial burden initially imposed by NAHCON’s stipulated fare.
This subsidy initiative underscores the government’s commitment to supporting its citizens in fulfilling their religious obligations, particularly amidst economic uncertainties. By alleviating the financial strain on intending pilgrims, the Kano State government aims to ensure that all eligible individuals have the opportunity to participate in the Hajj pilgrimage without undue financial hardship.
As preparations for the 2024 Hajj exercise continue, the subsidy provided by the Kano State government will undoubtedly facilitate the participation of thousands of pilgrims from the state, fostering a sense of inclusivity and accessibility to this sacred journey.
