Kano Suspends Popular Hausa Film Series 'Gidan Sarauta', 21 Others

The Kano State Censorship Board has taken decisive action by suspending the widely-watched Hausa film series Gidan Sarauta along with 21 other productions for failing to undergo the required censorship approval process.

According to a statement released by the Board on Monday, these titles were released to the public without prior submission for mandatory censorship, a violation of the state’s regulatory framework governing film production and distribution.

The suspension was authorized by the Board’s Executive Secretary, Abba El-Mustapha, following consultations with key players in the film industry. Abdullahi Sulaiman, the Board’s Information Officer, stressed that all producers of the affected films must halt broadcasting or streaming immediately and comply with submission guidelines between May 19 and May 25, 2025.

Other notable titles affected by this directive include Dakin Amarya, Labarina, Gwarwashi, Dadin Kowa, and Manyan Mata, among others. The Board warned that failure to adhere to this timeline would result in legal penalties.

The Censorship Board has also called on television stations and the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to cooperate in enforcing these regulations to uphold professional standards within the Kannywood film industry.
