The Kano State Government has unveiled a bold plan to boost its internally generated revenue (IGR) in 2025. Spearheaded by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, the state aims to generate over N20 billion per quarter, exceeding N80 billion by year-end.
Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, Director General of Media and Publicity at Government House, Kano, confirmed this development in a recent statement. The government also announced strict measures, including prosecuting tax defaulters, as part of its reforms to improve tax collection and compliance.

Improving Tax Collection Without Increasing Rates
Dr. Zaid Abubakar, the Executive Chairman of the Kano State Internal Revenue Service (KIRS), clarified that the goal of the reforms is to enhance tax efficiency rather than increase tax rates. Speaking during a high-level retreat, he revealed that the state plans to introduce a modern tax collection model in 2025.
This new system aims to ensure transparency and proper use of taxpayers’ money, with revenues directed toward critical sectors such as:
Health: Upgrading healthcare facilities.
Education: Improving schools and learning environments.
Infrastructure: Expanding water and sanitation services.
Urban Development: Modernizing cities to attract investors.
Agriculture: Supporting farmers with better resources.
Crackdown on Tax Evasion
To enforce compliance, the state will begin prosecuting tax defaulters in 2025. This follows the discovery of irregularities in revenue accounts operated by some government agencies. In response, the governor directed banks to transfer balances from unauthorized accounts into newly established IGR accounts managed by the state.
Additionally, the government is conducting a verification exercise to register expatriates and their businesses operating in Kano. This effort aims to identify regulatory gaps and improve coordination between businesses and the government.
Governor’s Assurance to Residents
Governor Yusuf reassured residents that tax revenues would be invested in impactful projects. “Our goal is to use every naira collected to improve the lives of Kano residents,” he stated, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to transparency and development.
A Promising Future for Kano
The ambitious revenue target reflects the government’s determination to build a more resilient economy and fulfill its promises to the people. With better tax management and strategic reforms, Kano is poised for significant growth in 2025 and beyond.
