Kano Traders Upset as Ice Block Prices Drop

Kano traders are expressing dismay as the price of ice blocks has drastically dropped. This decline, from N700 to N150, is attributed to the sudden change in weather conditions, with hazy and mild weather prevailing since last Sunday.

Just last week, a package of ice blocks was fetching between N600 and N700, while a sachet of “pure water” was priced at N200 to N300, driven by high demand during the ongoing Ramadan fast and the scorching sun exacerbated by irregular power supply.

A recent survey conducted by LEADERSHIP Friday in various parts of the metropolis revealed a significant decrease in ice block prices. A sachet-sized ice block is now being sold for N100 to N150, and the larger “Santana leather size” ice blocks are priced between N150 and N250, depending on the location. Vendors typically set up their stalls by the roadside between 3:00 PM and 6:00 PM, capitalizing on brisk sales driven by the intense heat resulting from power outages and the fasting period during March and April when temperatures soar to 40⁰ Celsius.

Halima Aliyu, an ice block seller on Katsina Road, shared her experience, noting that she purchased a bag for N1,000 (containing 20 sachets priced at N50 each) and currently sells it for N2,000. However, just last week, she was selling each sachet for as high as N250, totaling N5,000 per bag. The sudden drop in prices is attributed to the changing weather conditions and reduced demand.

Umar Hamza, who runs a cold store at the Asada Small Scale Enterprise, expressed frustration over declining sales amidst the changing weather patterns. He mentioned that last week, he would stock 300 bags of pure water daily in his cold room, selling them all at prices as high as N2,000 per bag. However, this week, sales have slowed, with prices plummeting to as low as N700 per bag, and unsold stock remaining until the next day.
