Katsina Governor Dikko Radda Employs First-Class Graduate Seen Hawking Sachet Water
Governor Dikko Umar Radda of Katsina State has offered immediate employment to Sham’unu Ishaq, a first-class graduate of Umaru Musa Yar’adua University, whose story recently gained widespread attention. Ishaq, who resorted to selling sachet water to support himself and his family, captured public sympathy after a video of him hawking on the streets went viral.
The Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Ibrahim Kaula, confirmed the appointment in a statement issued on Friday. He explained that an investigation revealed Ishaq graduated with first-class honors in B.Sc. (Ed.) Education/Biology during the 2021/2022 academic session. This was corroborated by the University’s Deputy Vice Chancellor.
“Ishaq completed his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme in Taraba State but had to turn to street hawking to meet personal and family obligations,” Kaula said. “Academic excellence deserves recognition, not relegation to street hustling.”

The governor’s decision is in line with his administration’s policy of rewarding academic excellence. Just last month, on October 12, 2024, Radda offered automatic employment to nine exceptional graduates from Isah Kaita College of Education, Dutsinma. Similarly, nine first-class graduates from Umaru Musa Yar’adua University were given direct employment during the university’s combined convocation in May 2024.
In the viral video, Ishaq shared his struggles, explaining how his daily earnings from selling sachet water barely met his basic needs. Despite graduating with top honors in July 2023, he had been unable to secure a job, leaving him to fend for himself through street hawking.
“I graduated with a first-class degree but couldn’t find a job. This sachet water business is what I rely on to survive,” Ishaq said. “Sometimes, the money I make only covers my meals. I can’t save anything.”
He appealed to Governor Radda and Nigerians across the country for help, expressing his willingness to take up any form of employment.
Governor Radda’s swift response underscores his administration’s dedication to nurturing talent and addressing the challenges faced by the youth in Katsina State.
“This administration is committed to harnessing the potential of our brightest minds, as they hold the key to the future of Katsina State,” Kaula concluded.
