Kebbi Begins Census of Almajiri Schools to Improve Education System

Kebbi State government, through the Ministry of Religious Affairs, has initiated a census of Almajiri schools across the state. The aim is to identify the parents, origin, location, as well as the number and age of the pupils, with the intention of finding a lasting solution to the educational system.

Muhammad Sani Aliyu, the commissioner for religious affairs, disclosed this during an ongoing ministerial briefing organized by the Ministry of Information and Culture in Birnin Kebbi. He stated that the ministry is diligently working to devise modalities that would integrate the Almajiri system of education alongside secular education for the overall development of society.

Aliyu emphasized that the current state of Almajiri education, where children below the age of five are sent to schools without means of sustenance, leading them to roam the streets and beg for survival, contradicts the teachings of Islam. He expressed the ministry’s determination to rectify this problem.

Furthermore, Aliyu mentioned that the ministry would regulate the conduct of Almajiri training, streamline the concept of Almajiri education, and enhance the Almajiri system of education to curb the vices associated with deviant Almajiri, who often engage in political thuggery and drug addiction.

The commissioner also disclosed that between May 2023 and March 2024, the ministry’s Zakat Department had provided free treatment for 23,542 psychiatric-related cases across the state through the Neuro Psychiatric Programme Outreach. This outreach occurs on Saturdays and Sundays at Zauro General Hospital, located on the outskirts of Birnin Kebbi. Medical personnel from the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital and Usumanu Danfodio Teaching Hospital, both in Sokoto, are involved in treating patients from the 21 local government areas of the state, neighboring states, as well as Benin and Niger Republics.
