Kebbi Government Donates N70 Million to Boost Rice and Wheat Farming

In a bid to advance the rice and wheat farming industry, the Kebbi State government has made a substantial donation of N70 million to support local farmers in acquiring high-quality seeds. Governor Nasir Idris announced this generous allocation during a recent meeting with representatives from the Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria (RIFAN) and the Wheat Farmers Association of Nigeria (WFAN) in Binrin Kebbi.

Kebbi State has earned a noteworthy reputation for its contributions to rice and wheat production, not only within Nigeria but also on the international stage. Governor Nasir Idris reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to sustaining and even expanding the momentum in these crucial agricultural sectors.

The governor emphasized the premium his administration places on agriculture by providing essential support services to farmers, thereby enhancing productivity. He acknowledged the removal of agricultural subsidies and highlighted the importance of embracing agriculture in these evolving times. As a tangible demonstration of this commitment, he pledged N70 million to facilitate the procurement of improved seeds, ensuring the uninterrupted cultivation of rice and wheat.

During the meeting, Alhaji Bello Barade, Chairman of RIFAN, extended congratulations to the governor on his election victory and lauded his decision to appoint two farmers as members of the State Executive Council (SEC). This move clearly underscores the governor’s dedication to incorporating farmers into the decision-making process.

Barade also revealed that farmers in Kebbi State engage in crop cultivation throughout the year, encompassing both dry and wet seasons. He disclosed that the association is actively involved in cultivating approximately 400 hectares of outgrower farms, with an estimated cost of N70 million for the distribution of improved rice seeds to local farmers. He appealed for continued support to further elevate agricultural productivity.

Alhaji Ibrahim Suru, RIFAN’s National Financial Secretary, called for a partnership between the association and the state government to streamline the supply of agricultural inputs to farmers. He pledged unwavering support for the government’s policies and initiatives aimed at ensuring sustainable social and economic development in the state.

The Kebbi State government’s resolute commitment to investing in the agricultural sector is not only commendable but also vital for ensuring food security, supporting local farmers, and propelling economic growth.
