
The Kebbi State Government has sponsored 35 indigent students to study Medicine and Pharmaceutical courses in Ethiopia under a fully funded scholarship programme.
The beneficiaries, drawn from poor and vulnerable families across the state, were officially sent to Addis Ababa to pursue their studies as part of the state government’s commitment to education, human capital development, and equal access to opportunities.
Government’s Commitment to Education
Speaking during a farewell ceremony for the students, Kebbi State Governor, Dr Nasir Idris, reaffirmed his administration’s determination to invest in education, particularly for brilliant students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
He noted that the sponsorship was based strictly on merit and transparency, adding that education remains a key pillar of his government’s development agenda.
Courses and Scholarship Coverage
Out of the 35 students sponsored, the majority will study Medicine, while others will pursue Pharmaceutical-related courses. Some of the beneficiaries are also Hafiz students who have memorised the Qur’an and were selected under a special consideration framework.
The scholarship package covers tuition fees, accommodation, allowances, and general upkeep throughout the duration of their studies in Ethiopia.

Governor Idris urged the students to remain disciplined, focused, and law-abiding while studying abroad. He encouraged them to represent Kebbi State and Nigeria positively and to return home after their studies to contribute to the development of the healthcare sector.
The initiative has been widely praised as a strategic move to address manpower shortages in the medical field while empowering youths through education.
