Kebbi State has commenced an investigation into a violent protest that took place on October 17 at the College of Health Sciences and Technology in Jega, Jega Local Government Area. Following the incident, which saw the provost’s residence set ablaze, the Kebbi State Government ordered the immediate closure of the college to ensure the safety of students and staff and prevent further escalation.
The decision to launch a formal investigation was announced by the Kebbi State Commissioner for Information and Culture, Alhaji Yakubu Ahmed-BK, after a State Executive Council meeting held in Birnin Kebbi. The government established an eight-member committee with a clear mandate to assess the causes of the protest, evaluate the damages, and recommend preventative measures to avoid future occurrences. Alhaji Ahmed-BK revealed that the committee would be led by the Commissioner for Environment, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa-Tungulawa, with Safiyanu Garba-Bena serving as its secretary.
The committee is expected to address key areas, including identifying the root causes of the protest and addressing any underlying grievances among the students. Their duties also extend to calculating the extent of the physical damage to the provost’s residence and other affected areas within the college grounds. The committee’s recommendations will ultimately guide the state’s decisions on how to create a safer and more stable environment for education within the institution and potentially within other state institutions. This committee has been given a two-week deadline to conduct their assessment and submit a comprehensive report to the state executive council for consideration and action.
