The Kebbi State government has categorically denied allegations of backing illegal mining activities in Libata village, Ngaski Local Government Area. This rebuttal was made by Haliru Aliyu Wasagu, the Commissioner for Solid Minerals Development and Mining, during a news conference held in Birnin Kebbi on Saturday.
The commissioner addressed a report published by a media outlet, labeling it as false, malicious, and an attempt to undermine the state administration’s efforts.

Strengthening the Mining Sector
In 2023, the administration of Governor Nasir Idris established the Ministry of Solid Minerals, alongside eight other ministries, as part of a strategic move to diversify Kebbi State’s revenue sources and address pressing developmental challenges.
The commissioner highlighted that in September 2023, the state took decisive action to sanitize the mining sector. All mining activities across Kebbi State were temporarily suspended to address concerns about illegal mining and associated security issues. This suspension was also influenced by a lack of corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, inadequate community development agreements, and non-compliance with royalty and tax payments.
Licensed Mining Operations in Libata
Contrary to claims of supporting illegal activities, Wasagu emphasized that the state government has introduced stringent protocols to regulate mining operations. He disclosed that seven mining companies have been officially approved to operate within the Libata area.

Among them, the Mining Cadastral Office in Abuja granted Three Crown Company a license for a 5.4 square-kilometer area, equivalent to 27 cadastral units. A portion of this land, covering 2 square kilometers (10 cadastral units), was subsequently allocated to El-Tahdam Exploration.
Ensuring Compliance
The commissioner assured that all mining companies in Kebbi State must adhere to rigorous rules and regulations. These include mandatory registration with the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development and compliance with community development and environmental protection standards.
