In response to an alert from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) forecasting severe flooding in Kebbi State due to the confluence of water from the rivers Guinea, Jallon, Gambia, and Niger, the state government has swiftly established a 16-member committee to manage and mitigate the potential disaster.
The committee was announced during a meeting at the Cabinet Office conference hall in Birnin Kebbi. Senator Umar Abubakar Tafida, the Deputy Governor and chairman of the committee, highlighted the state’s commitment to implementing measures aimed at minimizing the impact of the expected floods. He emphasized that Kebbi State has historically been vulnerable to flooding, which has resulted in significant damage, including loss of life, destruction of property, and adverse effects on agriculture and food security.
