The Kebbi State Government has initiated a comprehensive fumigation exercise aimed at eradicating mosquitoes across the state in a proactive move to combat malaria and improve public health. The launch took place in Birnin Kebbi, with Muhammad Nasir-Musa, the Director of Environmental Health at the Kebbi State Ministry of Environment, outlining the critical objectives of the initiative.
Nasir-Musa emphasized that the fumigation exercise is designed to tackle mosquitoes at various stages of their life cycle. “The main objectives of this exercise are to kill mosquitoes in their adult stage, eliminate mosquito larvae at the source, and destroy mosquito eggs,” he stated. By addressing all stages of mosquito development, the government aims to significantly reduce the risk of malaria transmission.
The director highlighted the dangers posed by mosquitoes, which are known carriers of diseases such as malaria, dengue fever, and yellow fever. This exercise comes at a crucial time, as reports indicate a rise in malaria cases in the region, particularly during the rainy season when stagnant water serves as an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes.
The fumigation efforts will cover not only Birnin Kebbi but will also extend to various Emirates, including Argungu, Yauri, and Zuru. “We are now fumigating the whole of Birnin Kebbi; all the drainages and surrounding areas will be treated,” Nasir-Musa stated. Key locations, including the Emir’s palace, Government House, and the Presidential Lodge, have already been treated, with plans to expand the operation throughout the state.
To ensure the success of the fumigation campaign, the Ministry of Environment will recruit ad-hoc staff who will receive specialized training in fumigation techniques. This approach aims to enhance the efficacy of the exercise and ensure thorough coverage of all affected areas.
In addition to the fumigation efforts, Nasir-Musa called on the public to take environmental sanitation seriously. He pointed out that many mosquito breeding challenges arise from poor sanitation practices. By improving waste management and eliminating stagnant water, communities can contribute significantly to reducing mosquito populations and preventing the spread of malaria.
The initiative has received praise from health professionals, including Abubakar Attairu, the Chief Medical Officer at Kalgo Medical Centre. Attairu expressed gratitude for the government’s provision of fungicides for hospital fumigation, stating, “This exercise is timely and will go a long way in addressing health-related illnesses.” He hopes that this fumigation effort will become a routine exercise to continually protect public health.
The Kebbi State Government’s fumigation exercise represents a significant step towards combating malaria and improving the health of its citizens.
