Birnin Kebbi, Nigeria – In a bid to address mounting security challenges and prioritize the safety of its citizens, the Kebbi State Government has taken decisive action by announcing a temporary ban on all mining activities within its jurisdiction. The announcement came during a press conference held in the state capital, Birnin Kebbi, on Friday.
Yakubu Tafida, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), explained that the government’s decision to halt mining operations was driven by genuine concerns for the safety of mining workers, host communities, and the need to implement measures for revenue generation. Tafida emphasized that this move is primarily a precautionary measure aimed at ensuring the well-being of individuals in mining communities and to prevent unauthorized foreign individuals from exploiting mining fields for nefarious purposes.

While acknowledging that mining is a matter within the Exclusive Legislative List, the SSG stated that the state government’s action followed a thorough assessment of the current security situation. The government aims to prevent mining areas from becoming hotbeds for criminal activities and protect its citizens from potential threats.
Tafida stated, “This has happened in other neighboring states, which we want to avert.” It is evident that the state government is committed to proactively addressing security concerns by implementing comprehensive evaluations and stringent regulations to promote responsible mining practices, protect the environment, enhance revenue generation, and, most importantly, ensure the safety and security of its residents.
