Expanding Maritime Potential Beyond Argungu Fishing Festival

Speaking at the 6th Quadrennial National Delegates Conference of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) in Lagos, Governor Idris emphasized that Kebbi, despite being landlocked, has extensive water resources. The Argungu Fishing Festival has long been a symbol of the state’s aquatic wealth, but officials are now exploring broader maritime opportunities.

A key focus is the Dolekaina community in Dandi Local Government Area, a strategic marine hub along the River Niger. Bordering Benin and Niger Republic, this area has attracted interest from the Nigerian Shippers’ Council and other stakeholders. The Kebbi State Investment Promotion Agency (KIPA) is collaborating with investors to maximize the state’s maritime advantages.

NIWA’s Ferry Services Transforming Water Transportation

The Nigeria Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has launched ferry services in Kebbi, providing an efficient and affordable transport alternative. This service reduces the pressure on road networks and enhances connectivity between communities. Governor Idris noted that these ferry services are key to integrating the state’s economy with national and regional trade routes.

Strengthening Trade and Export Activities

To ensure safe and efficient waterway operations, the state government is engaging with key stakeholders. These efforts aim to improve safety measures, facilitate smoother import and export processes, and create an enabling environment for businesses.

Additionally, Kebbi State is prioritizing mechanized farming to boost food production. The initiative supports both local consumption and export, further strengthening the state’s economy.

Commitment to Workers’ Welfare and Economic Growth

Governor Idris’ leadership was recognized with an award from MWUN for his dedication to worker welfare. Under his administration, the state has ensured timely payment of salaries and pensions, cleared outstanding leave allowances, and provided economic relief to workers affected by fuel subsidy removal.

He urged trade unions to propose innovative strategies to enhance labor conditions, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Initiative.

A New Era for Kebbi’s Economic Development

Kebbi’s proactive approach to maritime development marks a turning point in the state’s economic landscape. With ongoing investments in transportation, trade, and agriculture, the state is poised for significant growth in 2025 and beyond.
