Kebbi State University May Face Collapse Due to Poor Funding, ASUU Warns

The Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities (ASUU) at Kebbi State University of Science and Technology (KSUSTA) has issued a stark warning about the university’s future. Dr. Abubakar Umar, ASUU Chairman at KSUSTA, expressed serious concerns during a recent press conference in Birnin Kebbi, highlighting severe challenges exacerbated by chronic underfunding.

Dr. Umar painted a troubling picture of the university’s infrastructure, noting significant decay in facilities, inadequate housing for lecturers, and insufficient student accommodations. He emphasized that despite an increasing workforce, the university’s infrastructure has failed to keep pace, forcing many students to commute daily from places like Jega or Birnin Kebbi, disrupting their academic pursuits.

A critical issue raised by ASUU is the prolonged non-payment of academic earned allowances, spanning more than 11 years. This financial strain has deeply affected the morale and livelihoods of academic staff. Dr. Umar also highlighted the delay in implementing promotions for lecturers, which has led to a mass exodus of talented academic personnel seeking better opportunities elsewhere.

The healthcare situation at KSUSTA is equally dire, with the university clinic operating without a doctor since its inception. Dr. Umar stressed the urgent need for improved security measures following incidents such as the kidnapping of a lecturer and threats against others, underscoring the unsafe environment in which staff and students operate.

Dr. Umar passionately appealed to the Kebbi State Government to urgently address these pressing issues to prevent the collapse of KSUSTA. He emphasized the pivotal role of the university in providing accessible higher education, especially to students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

In response to ASUU’s allegations, the state Commissioner for Higher Education, Abubakar Tunga, denied the claims but did not provide specific comments on the outstanding academic allowances or the delays in promotion implementations.

The future of Kebbi State University of Science and Technology hangs in the balance as ASUU’s warnings highlight the urgent need for increased funding and effective management. The state government’s intervention is crucial to ensuring the survival and continued growth of this important institution, which plays a vital role in higher education in Kebbi State.
