In response to the recent fuel subsidy removal and its consequent economic impact, the Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has taken a proactive step to support workers in the state. The governor has approved a monthly palliative of N10,000 for every public sector worker in Kwara.
The decision was announced during a press conference held at the Government House, Ilorin, by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Rafiu Ajakaye, on Monday. This palliative measure is aimed at alleviating the financial burden brought about by the fuel subsidy removal and ensuring that workers can cope with the prevailing economic challenges.
Mr. Ajakaye emphasized that the monthly cash support of N10,000 would commence this month (July) and continue until a new minimum wage is introduced, ensuring that workers have sufficient support during these difficult times.
Governor AbdulRazaq’s approach stands out, as it adheres to the new advisory of the National Economic Council (NEC) that encourages states to devise their independent responses to the subsidy removal’s impact. By designing a tailored solution, Kwara State seeks to mitigate the challenges faced by its workforce effectively.
In addition to the monetary palliative, the governor has also directed the leadership of the civil service to implement a staggered work schedule for non-essential workers. The staggered plan will not exceed three days a week, which will significantly reduce transportation expenses for the workers, easing the financial strain they might encounter due to the subsidy removal.

It’s important to note that the staggered work plan does not apply to essential workers, as clarified by the governor’s spokesman. This measure ensures that essential services in the state continue without disruptions, providing critical support to citizens.
Earlier, Kwara State had introduced a three-day work schedule for its civil servants in response to the subsidy removal. However, the plan was suspended following the NEC’s earlier advisory, which urged states to await a more holistic response.
